Hong
Kong Zoological Botanical Gardens, a national park in Hong Kong, is one
of the oldest zoological and botanical centres in the world. Located on
the northern slope of Victoria Peak, it spreads over an area of 5.6
hectares and was initially founded in 1871.Plants in the Park
Hong Kong Zoological Botanical Gardens takes pride for its wonderful variety of plants and trees, most from tropical and sub-tropical regions. The park holds the plants of native origin as well as botanical examples. The variety adds plenty of colours to the park. Fragrant herb gardens host a unique shrub collection. Camellias, azalea, rhododendron, roses, and orchids are distributed all over the park.
Green houses have been segregated into five section namely- bromeliads and orchids, ferns, climbers, carnivorous plants and scented plants.
Animals in the Park
Approximate half of the park area is now dedicated for animal exhibition. The park is the residence of around 500 birds, 70 mammals, and about 70 reptiles. Mammals in the park include white-faced Saki, the Golden Agouti, Chinese porcupines, the Bornean orangutan, and the Emperor Tamarin. Birds like flamingos, pheasants, cranes, and wood ducks have been kept in the bird sanctuary. Those who enjoy reptiles would like to see a variety of turtles and a few snakes. The garden is one of the pioneering centers for the captive breeding of endangered species.
