Victoria
Park, the largest park in Hong Kong, stretches over an area of 17
hectares. The park, famous for its vast green space, is equipped with a
pleasant outdoor swimming pool and plethora of sports facilities.
Several events and demonstrations are also organized here, making it a
focal point in the social life of Hong Kong. The park is a combination
of a mini zoo (holding animals like peacocks and turtles), a running
track, numerous picnic spots and a children's park.Flower Fair
Just before Chinese New Year, Victoria Park holds the biggest flower fair in Hong Kong. On this occasion, visitors can buy different kinds of flowers or souvenirs. Or you can just walk around breathing in the fragrant air.
Activities
Victoria Park is an ideal place in Hong Kong for romantic evenings. An idol of Queen Victoria stands in the park and regular visitors like to sit around the statue. You can just stroll around the park watching the locals Tai Qi. The park is the home of several festivals and events. Several pools are located in the garden area and are often used by the locals. Children like to play in the toy boats kept there.
The gardens are beautifully lit with conventional Chinese lanterns during the Moon festival in September or November. Once a year a fair takes place in the main ground of the park, selling different types of clothing from various countries. Current affairs debates are held in Victoria Park at weekends. It is also the hosting site of Hong Kong's Tiananmen Square Vigil, held on June 4th each year.
How to Reach
One
can reach the Victoria Park very conveniently. Best way to reach the
place is MTR. One can get off at either Causeway Bay MTR station or Tin
Hau station. The place also falls in the routes of several public buses
and trams.History
The park, once a part of Victoria Harbour, was used to protect fishing boats and yachts during typhoons. In the 1950s the park was built replacing the shelter.
