Hong Kong Location

Geography of Hong KongHong Kong, a small island, sits on the southern coast of China, 60km east of Macau. South China Sea encircles it from three sides while to the north, it borders the city of Shenzhen in Guangdong Province over the Sham Chun River. Within Hong Kong territory, we include Hong Kong Island, Lantau Island, Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories as well as some 260 other islands. Hong Kong Island is most densely populated but in area, it is only the second largest. Biggest island here is Lantau.

Latitude and Longitude
Hong Kong is located south of the Tropic of Cancer on similar latitudes as Calcutta, Havana and Hawaii, and sharing the same longitude as Bali, and Perth.

Location of Hong Kong between the Taiwan Straits, the South China Sea, and the Pacific Ocean make it a strategic channel for sea traffic in the globe. Wide harbours and deep waters have also supported it in becoming an important sea station.

Topography
Land beneath Hong Kong is volcanic terra firma. Hills dominate the landscape. Backbone of Hong Kong is a crest lining from the northeast to southwest. Kowloon and most part of New Territories are flat. Southern shore has some luxury residential structures and nice beaches like Stanley and Repulse Bays. North and South shores are connected via a tunnel. Highest peak in Hong Kong is Ta Mo Shan, located in central New Territories at 957 meters. The lowest peak is Lo Chau Mun at 66 meters.

Although Hong Kong in located on volcanic plains, it witnesses only minor seismic activities, occasionally causing tremors. No major earthquakes have been reported to date. Last major oen was back in 1874, with a magnitude of 5.75 on the Richter scale.

Agriculture
Hardly three percent of Hong Kong's total land area is agriculturally cultivated. This region lies at the New Territories large alluvial plains.
